ABDOMINOPLASTY

What is a tummy tuck?

The abdomen is one of the areas most affected by births and extreme weight changes. Especially in women, with the effect of age and childbirth, excess skin and fat occurs in this area. With the effect of the muscles separated during pregnancy, the abdomen appears loose and convex. This situation results in the deterioration of body lines and the emergence of disproportion, which negatively affects the person both in terms of health and appearance. Abdominoplasty is performed to solve these problems in the abdomen.

What is its goal?

The primary goal of a tummy tuck is to eliminate sagging, drooping, and muscle separation (rectus diastasis) in the abdominal area caused by childbirth, weight changes, or age, resulting in a flatter, firmer, and more proportionate abdomen. The aim of this procedure is not only aesthetic but also functional improvement — strengthening of the abdominal muscles improves posture, increases lumbar support, and provides comfort during daily activities. Aesthetically, the goal is a natural-looking abdominal profile that is in harmony with the body's measurements. This allows the individual to experience both physical relief and increased self-confidence.

Who is it suitable for?

Suitable candidates for tummy tuck surgery

  • Those with noticeable sagging abdominal skin after pregnancy or weight gain/loss.

  • Those with skin folds or creases over a cesarean section scar

  • Those whose abdominal area does not improve with exercise and diet.

  • Those diagnosed with abdominal wall muscle separation (rectus diastasis)

  • Those who experience abdominal deformation after childbirth

  • If the disproportionate abdominal shape, incompatible with the waist circumference, is causing discomfort

🩺 The surgery does not reduce visceral fat; it aims to repair subcutaneous tissues and muscles.

🚫 Conditions that make a tummy tuck surgery unsuitable / require postponement

  • Those who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant in the near future: the abdomen may sag again after pregnancy.

  • Individuals who are still breastfeeding : due to hormonal changes and weight fluctuations

  • Patients with a body mass index (BMI) > 30–35 : weight control should be addressed first.

  • Those with uncontrolled diabetes, serious heart or lung disease.

  • Presence of a clotting disorder or active infection.

  • Those who cannot quit smoking /nicotine use: negatively affect wound healing.

  • Individuals with excessively loose skin or poor circulation in skin quality unsuitable for surgery

  • Patients who are psychologically unprepared and unable to manage the adaptation and recovery process.

⚠️ Who should undergo a tummy tuck surgery with caution?

  • Previous major abdominal surgery : old scars and tissue damage should be evaluated.

  • Presence of hernia (ventral/umbilical hernia): can be combined with surgery.

  • Those taking blood thinners : should temporarily discontinue medication with doctor's approval.

  • Patients who have recently quit smoking : blood flow may still be affected.

  • Areas with excessive cracks and poor circulation in the skin: special care may be required during the healing process.

  • Individuals with a history of embolism or venous insufficiency.

💬 Every candidate has a different health status, medical history, and body type. Therefore, a comprehensive evaluation before a tummy tuck surgery — and an individual analysis of risk factors — is extremely important.

ABDOMINOPLASTY pre-operative evaluation

Planning for a tummy tuck surgery is done on an individual basis.

The initial examination involves the following steps:

  • The thickness of the abdominal skin, its elasticity level, and the location of stretch marks are evaluated.

  • Existing scars, previous surgeries, and the presence of a hernia are noted.

  • Chronic illnesses and medication status are inquired about.

  • Blood tests and an anesthesia evaluation are performed.

  • Current weight is analyzed: the goal is to be close to the ideal weight.

💡 Quitting smoking and nicotine products before surgery speeds up recovery. We prefer not to perform surgery on individuals who are heavy smokers.

💡People who pay attention to their diet and exercise regularly see more satisfying and lasting results.

ABDOMINOPLASTY SURGICAL TECHNİQUES

Techniques used in tummy tuck surgery

Full Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

  • It is applied if there is excess skin around the navel and lower abdomen.

  • Abdominal muscle repair is performed, and the navel is repositioned.

  • The scar is usually planned to remain within the bikini line, in the lower abdominal area.

Mini Tummy Tuck (Mini Abdominoplasty)

  • It is only applied to people who have sagging skin in the lower abdominal area.

  • The umbilical cord is not repositioned, and the healing time is shorter.

  • It is ideal for people with mild deformities.

Tummy Tuck Surgery Process

Tummy tuck surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 3-4 hours. The steps involved are generally as follows:

1. Excess skin is removed through an incision planned along the navel line.

2. If there is a muscle tear, muscle repair and strengthening are performed with sutures.

3. The navel is repositioned if necessary.

4. The abdominal skin is pulled downwards to create a tighter appearance.

5. Drains are inserted, and the incision line is repaired with aesthetic sutures.

  • A special abdominal corset is worn after the surgery.

  • Wearing compression stockings is important.

  • Pain management and drainage monitoring are performed.

  • Hospital stay is 1-2 nights.

  • During hospital stay, short walks in a slightly inclined position help improve circulation.

Is it possible to get pregnant after a tummy tuck?

It is possible to get pregnant after Abdominoplasty. During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles will separate from each other again, and depending on weight gain, fat accumulation will occur in the abdomen. Although sagging is not as much as before, it may still occur. It should be kept in mind that if pregnancy occurs after tummy tuck surgery, deformation will occur in the abdomen.

Complications of abdominoplasty

⚠️ General Risks of Surgery

  • Bleeding (hematoma): Blood may accumulate under the tissue after surgery. This is usually prevented with drains, but sometimes additional intervention may be necessary.

  • Infection: Although rare, an infection may occur at the wound site. This is controlled with antibiotic treatment.

  • Risks associated with anesthesia: As with any surgery under general anesthesia, there is a risk of developing an allergic reaction or breathing problems (very rare).

🩹 Risks Specific to Tummy Tuck Surgery

  • Wound dehiscence: Stitches may open or wound healing may be delayed. The risk is increased in smokers.

  • Seroma (fluid accumulation): Serum-like fluid may collect under the tissue. It is drained by drainage or aspiration.

  • Sensory loss : Temporary or permanent loss of sensation may occur in the skin around the navel and lower abdomen.

  • Asymmetry or deformity: Although rare, differences in abdominal contour may develop; revision (corrective) surgery may be required.

  • Scarring : Scarring is inevitable, it fades over time, but in some people it may be large or prominent.

  • Blood clot formation (deep vein thrombosis): Prolonged immobility can cause blood clots to form in the legs. This can be prevented with early mobilization and the use of compression stockings.

  • Necrosis (tissue death): This is very rare; it is usually caused by smoking, circulatory problems, or overly tight stitches.

💬 Recommendations to Reduce Risks

  • Quit smoking at least 2-4 weeks before surgery.

  • Complying with the corset and medication treatment recommended by the doctor,

  • Avoid heavy lifting and overexertion in the first few weeks.

  • Eating a balanced diet , drinking plenty of water,

  • It is important not to neglect any of the checks .
