EYELID AESTHETICS

What is eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)?

Drooping eyebrows, wrinkles, skin accumulation under the upper eyelid, bags under the lower eyelid, a drooping mid-face resulting in dark circles under the eyes, and tear trough deformities are common problems. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is performed to correct these issues.

🌿 If you have any complaints in the upper or lower eyelid area, you should have an examination to be evaluated for eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).

WHO IS A SUITABLE FOR EYELID AESTHETIC SURGERY?

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a surgical procedure designed to reduce sagging, puffiness, and other cosmetic concerns in the upper and/or lower eyelids.

People who need aesthetic improvements to their upper eyelids.

  • Drooping of the upper eyelid and the eyelid falling over the eye.

  • Excesses that create a "tired/exhausted" expression in the eyes

  • Excess skin on the upper eyelid or sagging of the skin and muscles that becomes noticeable over time.

  • Sometimes aesthetic concerns prevent a person from feeling better about themselves in their social/professional life.

People who need aesthetic improvements to their lower eyelids.

  • Baggage (fatty tissue appearance) in the lower eyelid

  • Hollowness and shadowing under the eyes

  • Increased wrinkles and age-related sagging in the lower eyelid.

  • The appearance of "eye fatigue" in the under-eye area.

  • Some patients experience complaints related to lower eyelid laxity that affect posture.

‼️ Situations Requiring Caution

  • findings suggestive of eye conditions such as dry eyes

  • Functional disorder of the eyelid (ptosis)

  • Previous eyelid surgery

  • Unrealistic expectations

  • Excessive smoking

  • Use of medication or illness that increases bleeding

  • Careful evaluation is required if there are chronic diseases that prevent surgery.

Blepharoplasty may not be performed or may be postponed if the person's general health condition is not suitable.

HOW IS UPPER EYELID AESTHETIC SURGERY PERFORMED?

The surgical plan is tailored to the individual's needs.

  • The procedure is performed under local anesthesia or sedation anesthesia. (General anesthesia may also be used depending on the patient's condition or preference.)

  • The stages of the surgery;

➣ An incision is made along the natural crease of the upper eyelid.

➣ Excess skin is removed.

➣ Excess fat tissue is removed if present.

➣ The remaining tissues are repositioned to preserve the natural appearance.

  • Generally, hospitalization is not required.

  • After the surgery, a dressing is applied to the eyelid in a way that does not obstruct vision.

  • Upper eyelid surgery can be performed in conjunction with lower eyelid surgery and other facial surgeries.

HOW IS LOWER EYELID AESTHETIC SURGERY PERFORMED?

The surgical plan is tailored to the individual's needs.

  • The procedure is performed under local anesthesia or sedation anesthesia. (General anesthesia may also be used depending on the patient's condition or preference.)

  • The stages of the surgery;

➣ A transconjunctival (intraocular) or subciliary (under the eyelashes) incision is made.

➣ Excess fat tissue is repositioned or, if necessary, controlled removal is performed.

➣ Excess skin is removed in a controlled manner.

➣ The remaining tissues are repositioned to preserve the natural appearance.

➣ If necessary, a suspension lift is applied to the mid-face area.

  • Hospitalization may be required if general anesthesia is administered.

  • After the surgery, a dressing is placed under the eyelid in a way that will not obstruct vision.

  • Lower eyelid surgery can be performed in conjunction with upper eyelid surgery and other facial surgeries.

RECOVERY AFTER EYELID SURGERY

Swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the area are normal in the first few days after upper and lower eyelid surgery. Following our recommended cold compresses, medication, and aftercare plan will support healing. The changes in appearance will become more noticeable over time; the results will become apparent as swelling and bruising decrease.

The first days

  • Swelling and bruising may be the most noticeable stage.

  • Burning and a feeling of fullness may occur around the eyes.

  • Mild pain may be felt and can be controlled with simple painkillers.

  • Applying cold compresses and elevating the head can help reduce swelling.

  • There may be light sensitivity; sunglasses can be used.

1-3 weeks

  • Bruises and swelling usually begin to subside.

  • You may experience dryness/discomfort around the eyes.

  • The stitches are removed at the end of the first week.

  • Returning to daily life will be easier.

  • Scar treatment begins.

  • The marks may be more noticeable initially; this is normal.

  • Sun protection is important.

4-6 weeks and beyond

  • The marks are expected to become duller and their appearance softened.

  • Sensitivity and dryness around the eyes are reduced.

  • A more natural facial expression becomes more noticeable.

  • The result begins to become more balanced and visible.

POST-BLEPHAROPLASTY CARE RECOMMENDATIONS

Head elevation: Keeping your pillow elevated while resting during the first few days can reduce swelling.

Protecting your eyes: It is important to avoid rubbing/scratching and to follow protective care recommendations.

Cold compress: Applying the cold compress as described in the first few days will reduce swelling.

Sun protection: Sun protection is essential for better visibility of scars.

Strenuous exercise and blood thinners: Blood thinners can be started 1 week after surgery.

Don't miss your check-ups: Appointments are important for proper monitoring of your recovery.

⚠️ RISKS OF EYELID SURGERY

  • Bleeding / bruising (hematoma)

  • Infection

  • Delayed healing, scarring problems (thickening/asymmetry)

  • Temporary dryness, watering, or discomfort (dry eyes)

  • Asymmetry

  • Dehiscence/scarring at the suture line (rare)

  • Risks associated with anesthesia

  • Recurrence/undesirable outcome: Depending on initial expectations, anatomy, and healing capacity, a readjustment may be necessary.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can upper and lower eyelid surgery be performed together?

Yes, in some patients it is possible to plan both procedures together. However, which procedure will be performed and in what order will be determined on an individual basis through a physician's assessment.

How long does it take to recover after surgery?

Swelling and bruising may be visible in the first few days. Return to daily life usually becomes noticeable within 1–2 weeks; the maturation of scars and their final appearance will become clearer in a few weeks.

Will eyelid surgery leave scars?

Because the suture line is placed in the appropriate area, scars generally become less noticeable over time. Scar quality may vary depending on skin type, care, and the healing process.

Is the result permanent?

Eyelid surgery aims to correct age-related changes. Since the aging process is ongoing, the permanence of results varies from person to person; follow-up appointments are recommended.

Are there any risks associated with eyelid surgery?

As with any surgical procedure, risks such as bleeding/bruising, infection, asymmetry, and wound healing problems are rare. Additionally, dry eye symptoms may be temporary. All risks will be discussed in detail during the examination.
