What is an epidermoid cyst? What are the symptoms of an epidermoid cyst? How is an epidermoid cyst treated?
What is an epidermoid cyst?
An epidermoid cyst is a slowly growing, usually well-circumscribed, round-shaped lesion under the skin. Unless infected, it is painless and does not negatively affect general health. If signs of infection develop, it can cause pain and discomfort, or cause cosmetic problems.
Where does an epidermoid cyst occur?
It occurs when the keratin in our skin accumulates and forms a cyst anywhere on the body. Cysts, which are more common on the face, neck, back, chest, and genital area, are filled with a yellow-white, cheese-like substance.

Causes of epidermoid cyst
The exact cause of an epidermoid cyst is unknown. However, certain factors can trigger their appearance.
Trauma: Trauma that damages the hair follicle
Clogged hair follicles: Inability to drain skin secretions from the hair follicle
Genetic factors: Sometimes there may be a genetic predisposition
Skin problems: Acne, cystic acne, and ingrown hairs can trigger the formation of an epidermoid cyst.
What are the symptoms of an epidermoid cyst?
Slow-growing swelling: A round, raised bump may appear under the skin.
Skin color changes: Redness may occur as the cyst grows.
Pain: Pain occurs if an infection develops in or around the cyst.
Foul odor: A foul odor occurs if the material inside the cyst leaks out.
How is an epidermoid cyst treated?
Epidernoid cysts are generally harmless, but cosmetic concerns or infection of the cyst may require treatment.
Treatment of Infection:
If an infection has developed in or around the cyst, it should first be treated with oral and topical antibiotics. Sometimes the cyst may need to be drained. If there is pain, painkillers may be added to the treatment.
Surgical treatment:
Cysts can be removed with a minor surgical procedure. If there is no infection, the cyst can generally be completely removed through a small incision, adhering to aesthetic guidelines. If there is an infection, this is treated first. After waiting a few weeks, surgery is performed to ensure that the surrounding tissues have completely healed. Steroid injection: This can be used to shrink the cyst, but if the cyst isn't completely removed, it may regrow.
Is it safe to squeeze epidermoid cysts?
Squeezing or attempting to cut an epidermoid cyst can increase the risk of infection or spread the infection to surrounding tissues. Therefore, if you notice a lesion that shows signs of an epidermoid cyst, please consult a specialist.
